Frequently Asked Questions
Youth Members
How do I register my child?
If your child is interested in joining Cardiff Scout Group, we recommend contacting us first so we can confirm availability in the appropriate section and arrange for them to come along and see what Scouts is all about. Alternately, you can register for Scouts NSW free 4-week trial membership to test the waters and see if what we do is what you want to do. We will be notified that you have registered.
How much does it cost to join Scouts?
The initial cost of joining scouts are the Scouts NSW joining and membership fees, Group fees and a uniform. Some activities, camps and special events have additional costs.
Fees vary depending on the type of membership and when you join during the year. Contact Cardiff Scout Group for our current membership fees and payment information.
We aim to make Scouting accessible to families, so please speak with us confidentially if the cost of participating is a concern.
Can I use Active Kids Vouchers to offset cost?
Yes, Active and Creative Kids Vouchers can be used to offset some of the cost of the Scouts NSW annual registration fee. Once vouchers are available from Service NSW, register using your Active and Creative Kids Voucher via the following steps:

Where can I find out what is happening each week?

Do you have any social media platforms?
Yes! Cardiff Scout Group uses social media to share news, activities, achievements and the adventures our Scouts get up to.
Visit the Useful Links section of our website to find our current social media pages.
Where do I get a Scout uniform?
Scout uniforms can be purchased through the official Scout Shop.
Before buying a uniform, speak with your Section Leader to confirm what your child needs for their section.
Where do all the badges go on the uniform?
It can be confusing knowing where all those badges belong when you first join!
Badge placement depends on the type of badge. Scouts NSW provides uniform and badge placement information to help make sure everything ends up in the right place.
How does my child track their progress towards badges?
Youth members work towards achievements through the Scouts Australia Program Essentials, Outdoor Adventure Skills and Special Interest Areas, as part of the Achievement Pathways.
Youth members can record and track their progress online using Terrain, Scouts Australia's digital system supporting the youth program.
Your child's Section Leaders can also help them understand how the Achievement Pathways work and what they can work towards next.
Adult Helpers & Volunteers
Can adults get involved with Cardiff Scout Group?
Absolutely! Scouts isn't just for young people.
Cardiff Scout Group relies on adult volunteers to help us provide a great Scouting experience for our youth members. There are different ways to get involved, from becoming a Leader or Adult Helper through to assisting with particular activities or supporting the Group behind the scenes.
You don't need to have been a Scout yourself or already know everything about Scouting. Training and support are available.
How do I register as an Adult Helper?
Speak with one of our Leaders or the Group Leader about how you would like to help. We can explain the different adult roles available and help determine which option is right for you. Registration is completed in the same way that youth register, through the Become a Member page.
Adult volunteers need to complete the appropriate Scouts NSW registration and screening requirements before undertaking their role. There are 3 mandatory online training modules that must be completed. This is completed through the training portal.
We'll help guide you through the process, so don't worry if you're not sure where to start.
Do I need a Working With Children Check?
Adults working or volunteering with children are required to hold a valid NSW Working With Children Check (WWCC).
If you are registering for an adult role with Cardiff Scout Group, a WWCC can be obtained through Service NSW free of charge. When applying, make sure you select the appropriate type of check for the work or volunteering you will be undertaking.
Do I need a National Police Check?
Yes, adult roles within Scouts require background checking as part of the registration and screening process. Once registered as an adult in scouting, Scouts NSW will provide organise a National Police Check for you. You will receive an email to start the process. Obtaining a Police Check for an adult role in Scouting does not cost you anything.
Do Adult Helpers and Leaders need to complete training?
Yes. Appropriate training helps our adult volunteers understand their responsibilities and ensures we can provide a safe, enjoyable and high-quality Scouting program.
The training you need to complete will depend on your adult role. All adult roles do require completion of 3 mandatory online modules covering Adult Code of Conduct, Child Safe Scouting and WHS for Scouting.
You don't need to know everything before you start. Scouts provides training and resources to help you develop the knowledge and skills required for your role.
Where do I complete my online training?
Online training for adult members is completed through the Scouts learning and training systems.
Once your adult registration has been processed and you have the appropriate access, you can complete the online learning required for your role.
If you're unsure what training you need to complete, speak with the Group Leader or another Leader.
